AC Repair: What to Do When Your Evaporator Coil Freezes

It’s summertime in Safety Harbor, which means residents throughout are flicking the “on” switch to their air conditioners. With Florida humidity levels on the rise, heavy use of our cooling systems is inevitable. Unfortunately, that also means the need for AC repairs increases. At Millian-Aire Enterprise Corp. it is our mission to make these repairs as seamless and painless as possible, which is why we want to help you determine what’s wrong with your unit as quickly and easily as possible.

One of the most common problems that occur with air conditioners is that they freeze up. There are a number of reasons that can cause this to happen. Whether you have an outdoor unit, which can have pipes literally covered in a thin sheet of ice, or an indoor window AC that leaks water, some of the causes could be:

  • Low airflow
  • Dirty filter
  • Dirty evaporator coil
  • Thermostat settings too low

If you suspect one of these is happening to your unit, you should call for emergency AC repair from our Safety Harbor company.

What to Do When Your Evaporator Coil Freezes

To check where the problem is originating from, turn off the unit and pull out the filter. If it is clogged with dirt and debris, replace the filter with a new one. Before turning the air conditioning back on, though, put it on “fan” mode for a few hours, and let the frozen evaporator completely thaw.

After you do this, power your unit back on and see if the problem persists. If it does, the issue can likely be attributed to your evaporator coil.

If the problem is with your evaporator coil, chances are that you are going to need to call a professional company. But first, you want to turn off your unit, as continued use with a faulty evaporator can affect the compressor and lead to more costly air conditioning repairs.

Check the coil on the inside and clean if necessary. You should also check refrigerant levels. These are two of the very first steps a professional will do when they come to inspect your system, so having already done them can be beneficial.

If you are still unsure of the source of the problem, contact us at Millian-Aire as soon as possible. We are the premier company for Safety Harbor AC repairs and can have your system up and running as efficiently as when you first got it!
