Spring Maintenance for Your AC

As Florida residents we rely heavily on our air conditioning units. When they fail us, it can become frustrating, annoying and, well, painfully hot. To prevent the need for emergency AC repair services, it is important to take frequent inventory of your unit’s status and ensure everything is working as it should be. Although we strongly recommend participating in our HVAC maintenance program, below are a few things you can do this spring to ensure your AC is in tip-top shape:

  1. Check refrigerant.

It is possible to have too little or too much refrigerant. If it has too much, the system can become overcharged and consequently begin functioning less than efficiently. With enough damage it can stop cooling altogether. It can also severely damage the compressor. When it doesn’t have enough, it is common to see the coils freeze, which is when you should call an HVAC professional in the Tampa, New Port Richey and Palm Harbor area.

  2. Check air filter.

Many people know they are supposed to change their air filters, but fail to do so as often as they should. A new one should be installed approximately every month; otherwise the dust and debris build up will increase your energy bills while decreasing the efficiency of air flow throughout your home.

  3. Clean evaporator.

Usually located above the main duct, it is possible your unit is not built that would allow you to clean the evaporator yourself (you’ll know if you are not able to access it), in which case you would have to call a professional. However if you are able to access it and want to try cleaning it yourself, remove the foil insulation and unscrew the plate. When you take the evaporator out, you can then clean it out using a brush.

  4. Check thermostat settings.

The thermostat will turn on and off based on the temperature of the room(s) according to what it is set at. Depending on if you have an older or modern thermostat will affect what kind of bimetallic strip you have. If you have an older thermostat, the repair solution is usually to upgrade and replace it with a newer device.

While you go through the check list for your air conditioning maintenance, make sure to keep an eye out for any signs of rust, corrosion, water/moisture stains or icing. If you suspect there might be an issue with any of the above parts, or you sense your air conditioner is not functioning as efficiently as it could be, give us a call at Millian-Aire Enterprise Corp. today.
