3 Signs You’ve Been Operating Your AC All Wrong

Operating Your AC All Wrong

An air conditioner is probably one of the costliest appliances you’ll buy for your home. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. You must also prepare for recurring electricity and maintenance expenses. So, it’s no surprise that most homeowners take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way to recoup the investment. Unfortunately, incorrect usage can throw a monkey wrench into the best-laid plans. Your AC will perform at maximum efficiency only when used properly, which is why you should keep an eye out for the three signs of poor AC operations mentioned below:

1. You Leave the AC Running Despite Not Being Home

A common belief is, air conditioners must work doubly hard and expend more energy to cool down your home if you turn off the system before leaving. But the truth is, running the AC in an empty home all day long is just wasteful. One option is to raise the temperature on your thermostat when you are not home. Not only do the savings add up over time but your unit functions more efficiently. ACs run best at full speed instead of functioning for shorter durations at a reduced speed to maintain stable temperatures. De-humidification is also faster and easier at full blast.

2. You Turn On the Ceiling Fan Simultaneously

Fans have no bearing on temperature; what they do is move air across the skin, making you feel more comfortable. So, switching on your AC and ceiling fan together in the room will not lower the temperature more rapidly. Instead, you’ll simply be wasting energy. So, avoid leaving the ceiling fan on to maintain a comfortable home environment while the air conditioner is switched on.

3. Doors and Windows Stay Ajar While the AC is Running

Outside air is bad for cooling. Keep your windows and doors sealed shut to prevent leakage of the cool air. If there are gaps in your doors and windows, plug them carefully; otherwise, warm air from the outdoors will flow into your room and prevent the AC from maintaining comfortable temperature and humidity. Moreover, these conditions increase the pressure on the AC compressor, leading to malfunctions or breakdowns over time. So, turn on your AC only after confirming there are no openings anywhere.

Your wallet isn’t the only thing that pays for incorrect AC usage; the system also sustains severe strain and damage. If left unchecked, it could lead to performance problems or worse. Thankfully, there’s no issue that a call to your local AC repair technician won’t solve. So, if you ever encounter any of these AC mishaps, don’t hesitate to give us a call here.
