How to Choose the Right Filter For Your Air Conditioner

According to a United States Environment Protection Agency (EPA) report, indoor air pollution tops the list of public environmental hazards in the USA.  As most people in America spend about 90 percent of their time indoors, keeping the indoor air clean is very important for health. Your AC, when fitted with the correct filter, can help you achieve your clean air goal quite easily. The trick here is to choose the right AC filter and keep it clean. Here are the points you should keep in mind:

Choose the Right Filter Size

Read the user manual before attempting to change the filter. Not only is it essential to know the right filter size but also the correct filter type. You must go for filters that are compatible with your machine. Normally, home ACs have air filters which are one-inch thick, but some models may need thicker filters. The height and width of filters often vary from one model to another.

Tip: Never buy your filter with eye measurements; measure it using a tape.

Choose the Right Filter Type

Most of the filters available in the market are disposable in nature. Even the easy-to-install one-inch thick fiberglass filters need to be disposed of every two to three months. Washable filters are durable and can last for several years. You will just have to remove the filter once in every few months and clean it thoroughly according to the instructions.

Choosing the Right MERV Ratings

The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) tells you how efficiently your filter is going to remove the suspended particles from indoor air. The ratings are available on a scale of one to 16. The higher the score of your filter, the more efficient it is in trapping contaminants from the air. Most homeowners have air filters with MERV ratings between seven and eight, but if you have a family member suffering from asthma, installing the highest MERV-rated HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) may become necessary.

To breathe the cleanest air, you must take care of your AC unit and change its filter regularly. It’s important to choose the right filter for your AC because your health is directly affected by it.
